Months after bringing same-sex marriage to all 50 states, a third Supreme Court justice is trying it out herself – by officiating a lesbian couple’s wedding.
Equal marriage came to all 50 US states in June this year, when five of the nine Supreme Court justices ruled in ‘Obergefell v Hodges’ that it is unconstitutional to prevent gay couples from tying the knot.
To date, a number of Supreme Court justices have taken advantage of the law personally – by marrying same-sex couples themselves.
Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, often seen as the most liberal judges on the court, has officiated a number of same-sex weddings before and after the case – including a ceremonial wedding for the US ambassador to Vietnam. Justice Elena Kagan also officiated a wedding for her former law clerk Mitchell Reich and his husband Patrick Pearsall.
Justice Sonia Sotomayor has now also performed a wedding for a lesbian couple – meaning all three women on the highest court have personally performed same-sex weddings.
According to the Washington Blade , Sonia Sotomayor officiated at the wedding of Ingrid Duran and Catherine Pino, the founders of D&P Creative Strategies.
The Blade states that the wedding took place in DC’s Potomac View Terrace – with a number of Democratic lawmakers also present for the ceremony.
